Impressive Beauty Poojana Pradhan!

Poojana Pradhan is already an established name in the glamour circles of Nepal. She has been in the entertainment business for almost five years and now she informs us that her last name is actually not Pradhan but Gurung. She says, "My mother's name is Uma Pradhan and my father's Khadga Bahadur Gurung. They divorced when I was a kid and my dad married another woman. I started living with my mom and since the time I can remember I have always used Pradhan and not Gurung. However, on my citizenship and passport, I am referred to as Gurung!" Quite a dilemma one would reckon! She further informs, "I used to spell my name as Puja and it has just been only a few months that I have started writing my name as Poojana. Numerological effect you know!"

As of now, she is working on two movies simultaneously. "I am quite busy with the shooting of 'Kalo Baaz' directed by Deepak Basnet. The other one is 'Timi Ko Hau'. This is again directed by Deepak Basnet. Come Chait and I will be doing another movie called 'Champion' directed by Pradip Shrestha and produced by Maunata Shrestha," informs Poojana.

Things have been going pretty good for her lately. Only yesterday she completed the shooting of a music video -- "Mero Yaad Timilai", directed by Suresh Darpan Pokahrel and Dinesh Adhikari. And this is not where her hectic activities end. She just came back from a trip to Qatar where she had a show and come February 15, she will be leaving for Korea along with 1974 AD. This program is scheduled for February 20. As soon as she returns back from Korea, she will be leaving for Belgium, UK and Australia, for performances for which the dates have already been finalized. "I shall be performing on songs from Nepali films as well as remixed numbers!" states Poojana. Impressive!

Udesh Shrestha's Rahasya

Udesh Shrestha had released his second solo album 'Rahasya' about five months and now he is already working on the third tentatively titled 'Rahasya Vol II'. He mentions that he will be releasing it within three months time, for which he has already started working on the details. He says, "So far, I have recorded five songs! They are called "Pagal Banayou Malai", "Timi Bina Garo", "Jiundo Manche", "Ma Ta Haarharu" and "Nachocha Timi". This album will be in the market under the label of Reeyaz Music Company. My last album was also released from the same company. After the recording is over, we will start working on a music video as well as on the promotion of this album," further adding, "As soon as we are done with the promotional activities of 'Rahasya Vol II', we intend to go back to 'Rahasya' and make a new video from it. Then on, we will promote both the albums together." That is quite a strategy!

Besides all this, he has also been contributing for a collection album titled 'Speed' by DJ Yuva. I have sung a number called "Timilai Chahera" and "Naam Leyera". Both the songs have been visualized. The former one is already released and the latter one is going through some editing." According to information provided by him, he has also sung in an album -- 'Rap Game' -- by Aago Jwala who resides in the UK but is in the country at the moment. "'Rewind II' is scheduled to hit the stands shortly and I might sing in this album as well. Talks are going on!"

Pramod Kharel…New Kid On The Block

Aspiring and talented new artist Pramod Kharel is all geared up to release his second solo album very soon. His first album 'Prapti' released some two years back did receive lukewarm response with the song "Lagcha Timi Sagar Sari" doing the rounds frequently at various countdowns.

He informs us that this second album will be in the music stands under the label of Dhaulagiri Cassette Centre. "I had made up my mind to name this album 'Realize' but an astrologer suggested that I name the album with the initial 'S'. Hence, I have still not been able to figure out the name!" Any suggestions?

Because he had an infection to his throat, he relates that he was not able to release this album much earlier. "I took my own time to prepare this album and during all this while I didn’t do any stage shows as such. In fact, I won't be signing at any shows till 2063 BS is over!" confirms Pramod.

On his previous album, he had just incorporated adhunik songs with a touch of classical flavor. However, this time round, he has worked on "total melodious numbers". "I have eight songs on it and each one of them is different from the other. The songs are of high pitch and have a base of classical but are presented in a ‘westernized format’. (Whatever that means) Most probably, this album will be released by the first week of Falgun and together with it, a music video will also be premiered. The song is called "Bacheko Thiye" and will be directed by Alok Nembang. The shooting of this video is scheduled to happen very shortly!"

Ash-Abhishek's wedding plans

A classical singer from Varanasi is currently on an extended practice session these days in preparation for the most talked about marriage of Bollywood couple Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai.

Channulal Mishra said that he has been invited by Amitabh Bachchan to perform at Abhishek's wedding.

"Amithabh Bachchan said that he wanted to organise a programme on the occasion of the wedding of Abhishek and Aishwarya. He said the date for the wedding was not fixed, but I have come to know that it will be sometime in March," Mishra said.

Families of Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai on Monday said that both had got engaged at a private ceremony. Abhishek reportedly placed a diamond ring on Aishwarya's finger.

Speculation of a formal link gained ground after both families visited several temples to pray for them, as their stars were reportedly not in harmony.

Reports of an impending marriage were earlier fuelled after Ajitabh Bachchan, the younger brother of Amitabh, who met a Bangalore based astrologer Chandrashekhar Swami, to see if the couple's horoscopes matched.

The planets also seem to be blessing the couple. They were declared to be perfect by matched by the astrologer.

Abhishek was earlier engaged to Bollywood star Karisma Kapoor in 2002, but the marriage was called off for unexplained reasons. Abhishek (30) and Aishwarya (33) have starred together in Hindi films like Dhai Akshar Prem Ke, Kuch Na Kaho, Umrao Jaan and Dhoom II as also Mani Ratnam's "Guru". Aishwarya, who has acted in over 40 films, was crowned Miss World in 1994. Abhishek too has acted in about 40 films.

Rupak Memorial Week

Former FIFA (Federation of International Football Association) referee Late Rupak Sharma was one of the most prominent personalities in the History of Nepali sports. To commemorate his 53rd birth anniversary, Rupal Memorial Foundation (National Talent) shall be hosting Rupak Memorial Week to honor this respected person.

Late Rupak Sharma was not only actively involved in promoting sports in Nepal but was equally active in encouraging education, art and social deeds. Magh 10 will henceforth, be celebrated for which the event has already been planned together with various other programs throughout the week.

On Magh 7 and on Magh 8, Friendship Global Award Writing Competition (School Level) is taking place at Rupak International Higher Secondary School, Kupondol at 11 am. On Magh 9, again Friendship Global Award Writing Competition (School Level) will be held at Rupak Smriti Pratisthan Bhawan, Satdobato at 11am. On Magh 10, Rupak Smriti Pratisthan Bhawan at Satdobato will be inaugurated at 11am and on the same occasion, his statue will also be unveiled. On Magh 10 itself, Aasish Malla, veteran play artist will be honored for his contribution to the development of theatre. An art exhibition on the life and times of Rupak Sharma has also been scheduled. On Magh 11, a friendly football match is planned at the Stadium as well. This match will start at 1:00 pm. Come Magh 12, and there will be a cultural event taking place at Hotel Annapurna, Durbar Marg. This program will commence from 5 pm onwards. On Magh 13, Rupak Memorial Peace Walk will take place. Welcome Back Deepak Thapa

After the overwhelming success of the yesteryear hit "Bidesh Janey mayalu Timilai" (Included in the Collection album 'Avisekh' and released way back in 1995), Deepak Thapa seemed to have got rid of his microphone. The song became an instant hit and a regular chart topper. People waited anxiously for more music from him. However, he wished not to make anymore music and was even considered ‘a one hit wonder’!

We decided to talk to him and he shares that he is a "busy man" these days. He admits, "I have been tied up in doing guitar works and music arrangements. On an average I do about 22 guitar takes everyday. The entire day I am busy with it and in the evenings, I am engrossed in doing music arrangements especially for new artists." He also cares to share that he is planning to release his solo album very shortly. "This album will feature songs from my previous album 'Avisekh' along with some other songs. The songs that I have chosen from 'Avisekh' are "Bidesh Janey Mayalu Timilai", "Tesaile Mayalu", "Mera Nayanka Sagar" and "Timi Mero Maya Bani". Since I have a hectic schedule, I can't say right now when this album will be released. One thing which is definite is that I will release it some day soon since my family and my friends are keen to see me do it. I too want to go ahead as soon as I can take the time out to do so." states Deepak.

'Chor Sipahi' Running To Full Houses

Sovit Basnet's movie 'Chor Sipahi' is running to full houses in theatres outside the valley. He opines that this is the first time in the history of Nepali Films that a movie is being shown at 20 theatres simultaneously. "Altogether, we released out seven prints and distributed it to various theatres. Besides this, 13 other theatres are showing the movie on LCD projectors. Previously, the trend was to release out just six prints. The reason for going ahead with my idea is because people in general would be able to watch the movie at the same time and financial logistics can be handled much better without waiting for a long time. This is also the beginning of an “all Nepal release concept”, which is going to help the industry in the long run." shares Sovit.

'Chor Sipahi' is made at a budget of 40 lakhs and the actors in this movie are Bhuwan KC, Ramit Dhungana, Bijaya Lama, Nikhil Upreti, Rejina Upreti and Sanchita Luitel. This movie revolves around a deaf, a blind and physically handicapped men, and the way they fool the world. The flick is said to be comedy based and full of action and entertainment.

So far this movie has not hit the theatres in Kathmandu. However, according to Sovit, 'Chor Sipahi' will be released in the valley within two months. He says, "The movie has been really well received, loved and enjoyed by moviegoers. I am sure that viewers from Kathmandu will also like it since this can be categorized as a paisawasul movie." emphasizes Sovit.

'Lal Salaam' The movie

Everyone is aware of the fact that the Maoist have now joined mainstream politics and now they intend to take one step further (at least we would like to believe so) is that they are all geared to make a movie. According to information just received, this flick shall be titled 'Lal Salaam' and will be directed by Shivajee Lamichane.

As stated by the man himself, shuvamuhart of this movie was held today at the Academy Hall, Kamaladi. He elaborates, "This movie revolves around the struggle that the Maoist went through for the past 10 years. There will not be any typical hero as such in it or some melodrama to witness. Since this flick is based on real life tragedies and finally victory, it is going to be very different! The actors in this movie are the ones who had actually participated in real wars that the Maoists had initiated. Former brigade commander and a company commander will be seen in this movie and will portray incidents that occurred during the time of their right to speech." He also states that some of the actors however will be the professional artists. The names of the people who will be in this movie are Rajan Bam, Chhintan from the Maoist front and the professional actors involved are Ganesh Upreti, Sushil Pokharel and Chet Bahadur Singh among others. "Within ten days time, the entire crew of 'Lal Salam' is scheduled to leave for Baglung for the shoot. They will also be going to the Terai region and Jumla," informs Shivajee.

'Lal Salaam' will be presented by All Nepal Janasanskritik Mahasangh and will be produced by Chalchitra Ekai. Information has it that the movie will be released before the promulgation of the Constitutional Assembly. 'Lal Salam' is said to be completed at a whopping budget of one crore Nepali rupees.

Shivajee has so far produced four Kollywood movies. They are 'Kancha', 'Aago', 'Juni Bhari Lai' with the latest being 'Lal Salaam'. This particular movie is going to be his first flick as a director. He is the central member of All Nepal Janasanskritik Mahasangh and is the coordinator of Chalchitra Ekai and also the chairperson of Ganatantrik Chalchitra Karmi Morcha. Kiran Pradhan’s 'Gurudakshina'

Respected yesteryear singer and prominent musician Kiran Pradhan had established a music studio -- Music Network -- some months back. So, what’s the big deal? According to Kiran Pradhan himself, "Work at Music Network is getting such a response that though I own the company, I myself have not been able to record my songs on time. I am working on my fifth album 'Gurudakshina' but somehow have not been able to slot in time for my songs. I have only complete five songs so far! I intended to release it during Tihar but due to the time constraints at the studio I am definite that this is going to take longer."

His fourth album 'Saugat' was released in 2061 BS. However, no music videos from it were made and now he has three music videos from this new album in the pipeline. The songs are "Timilai Bhetne Rahar", "Arkai Maya Laune Bhaye" and "Sodhna Ma Aaya". The latter video has been directed by himself and the former were shot in London before last Dashain while he was there. "The reason for the delay concerning the music video is because of my hectic schedule!" shares Kiran Pradhan. He also has added responsibility as the principal of Holy Garden School located at Balaju.

The Shadows Still In A Limbo

Everyone is aware of the fact that the band 'The Shadows' have been changing their members constantly! However, it was just a few months back that they had settled down with new members and this time round everyone of us were pretty sure that they would stick with the lineup. After the changes, they had even toured some parts of Nepal.

It seems that 'The Shadows' have the habit of confusing all of us or is this some kind of a publicity stunt? Information now has it that the previous band members (Amit and Prakash Rasaily. Prakash on lead guitar was first replaced by Regan Tuladhar and then by Sunny Manandhar and Amit on the bass was replaced by Aman Tamrakar) who left the band and went to Australia for further studies have in fact not left the band but is still very much making music together. Prakash who is now is Sydney says, "Though we are abroad, we are still making music and working for the benefit of 'The Shadows'. In fact, Amit (who is now in Melbourne) and I have been composing music for 'The Shadows' upcoming third album”. Amit and I meet occasionally and we have been practicing together for this upcoming album."

For a better insight into the matter, we tried to contact the band manager of 'The Shadows' -- Rupesh Sen. His mobile was switched off and when we tried to contact Swopnil (vocalist), he was not reachable. We shall keep trying though and will definitely update you on further developments.

Mampi Ghosh, The New ‘Pawankali’

'Pawankali' a popular program being broadcast from Katipur Television, has managed to get quite a lot of viewer ship lately, thanks to the new anchor . This program was first hosted by Luniva Tuladhar followed by Tara Kandel and now the Bengali beauty Mampi Ghosh has taken up the mantle of continuing the presentation of this very show.

Mampi replaced Tara as 'Pawankali' since Tara had to quit to pursue her further studies abroad. "When I was offered to do the show at first I hesitated, but later decided that I should give it a shot! Initially, I had a little difficulty in getting the accent as well as the typical attitude of Pawankali right. I watched the earlier episodes continuously for almost two days at a stretch. It was only on the third day that I was all geared up to face the camera as the new Pawankali. Taking up 'Pawankali' was a challenge in itself. Now, that I have started, I am also learning a lot of things everyday! I take comments and suggestions in good stead and I make sure not to repeat my mistakes." She further adds, "It is only natural for people to compare me with the previous Pawankalis and at times this new Pawankali might not have the same effect on people but I promise to work hard and not to disappoint the 'Pawankali' fans and well-wishers in the days to come."

Pawankali aka Mampi Ghosh also works as a radio jockey at Radio Nepal. She has been presenting programs like 'Fool Times', 'Nishana Achuk', 'Gharsangi' and 'Bollywood Express' for quite some time now. She started her career as an anchor at Hits FM where she worked for two years. She then worked at Green Productions and hosted programs for Nepal FM. She also did the show 'Timro Sur Mero Geet' for Nepal Television.

Gyanu Rana’s New Remixed Album!

Prominent adhunik and an accomplished bhajan singer Gyanu Rana who has been in the Music industry for almost 30 years now informs us that she intends to re-mix some of her old numbers and incorporate them in an album titled 'Best of Gyanu Rana'. She says, "There will be altogether eight to ten full fledged re-mixed songs on it and I will be singing all of them! The reason for going ahead with this is I believe one should move according to the times. The work regarding the arrangements and mixing has been taken care of by DJ Santosh and Buddha Sayami. It should be released by February 2007."

As of now, she has completed the recording of "Changba Oi Changba" and "Kasailey Bujhena Mero Mann Ko Bahalai". If you think that the re-mixed version of "Changba Oi Changba" done by DJ Raju is the ultimate and that another re-mix of the same track may not materialize…maybe we are underestimating Gyanu Rana. She opines, quote “the version Mausami did is quite artificially done and the way I have re-done it is far better than that!" Not only this, but she is confident that this album is also going to do wonders in the market commercially. "I have sung around 1200 numbers and I am 100 per cent sure that this album of mine is going to surpass all expectations. I can say this because of my years of experience in the music field."

She also informs that the music video of "Changba Oi Changba" is being worked out and DJ Santosh will be singing along with her as well.

All said and done, she has just completed yet another bhajan album, which is scheduled for release very shortly under the label of Purnima Cassette Centre. Lastly, she shares, "the compositions are all done by me except for two songs, which has been done by Krishna Devi Ranjit and Dhundi Raj Koirala."

Riff Raff, a new band in nepali music field

Riff Raff (Pravakar on vocals, Keshab Subba on bass guitar, Sharad Thapa on drums, Satyam Rai on lead guitar, Sunil Pradhan on vocals and rhythm guitar and Aseem Lama on keyboard) is a band which was formed in Kurseong sometime during 1997. They had released their critically acclaimed debut album 'Anyolma' some two years back from Indreni Cassette Centre. Now, they are all geared up to take the music industry by storm with their second album -- 'Sammohan'.

They say, "We are in Kathmandu for the final mixing, mastering and to look for a music company who would be interested in releasing our album. The songs on it have flavors of rock pop and were recorded at Antara Recording Studio, Kurseong. One of the songs on it "Ridaya" speaks about Nepal and the rights of the people after loktantra. The rest talk about the environment of Nepal and the present situation here. Three music videos ("Kohilai Rijhauney", "Ridaya Bhari" and "Mero Maya") have already been made." They further inform us, "Initially, we only sang English numbers and slowly changed our track and started singing Nepali numbers as well. We are here to look at a wider market that Nepal can provide and hope for support and exposure in the Music industry of Nepal. We are hopeful that we shall be accepted by people here and we also believe that the media’s help now will go a long way in encouraging other Nepali musicians from across the border to set their foot in doing something worthwhile in the music field."

Mausami Gurung Speaks Out

Looks like things are going really great lately for the talented Mausami Gurung who is one of the most sought after female singers in the country today.

Some months back, she had gone on a tour of Australia along with other Nepali artists and it has just been a couple of weeks since she come back after a series of events in the UK. While she was busy performing abroad, some of our readers got back to us saying that "Mausami, instead of singing Nepali songs to Nepali audience abroad sang Hindi Bollywood numbers. Quote, “If we wanted to hear Hindi songs why would we call her here!". We often hear about Nepali artists entertaining their audience with Hindi numbers while touring abroad; not that we want to make an issue out of it. After all, artists are required to entertain the crowd and give them their money’s worth irrespective of what language they sing in. Nevertheless, since it was one of the burning issues plaguing some of our readers, we decided to talk to Mausami herself and get her thoughts on it.

She admits that she did sing a Hindi number ("Dummaru Dum") while she was performing in Australia. She says, "Music is something which is very broad. My opinion is that at the end of the day music is music. It is not something which can be chained by a nationality or language. It is so diverse and everyone should be open about it. I did sing that Hindi song since the audience was asking for more encores from me. I had sung "Changba Oi Changba" a zillion times and I thought they might get bored of it. James Pradhan who was also performing at the same event asked me to go ahead with it and I saw no reason not to. There are people who like me or anyone else for that matter, singing a Hindi number and there are people who don't like it. Now what are we supposed to do? As I said before, music is music and people should be open about it!" It’s loud and clear Maushami! Hope you are reading this from Australia.

Now, that our questions were answered, more so of one of our readers from Australia, we decided to change the subject and ask her about her next project. She says, "Well, I am working on my second album and I have made an effort to make it different from my previous venture 'Unforgettable'. My plan is to release this new album by the end of January. It has different flavors of songs on it starting from Latino to selo, romantic to R&B. I am also doing a duet with Sugam Pokhael. The song is called "Lyauna Ta". This song was incorporated in my first album as well but this time round we have made many changes on it!" Way to go Maushami! Keep it up and good luck with your second album!

1974 AD’s' On Air

'1974 AD' is no doubt one of the most popular bands in the country today but when it comes to releasing their album, it seems that they prefer to take their own time. Their seventh album On Air was supposed to be released a couple of months back and the halla created then by them had always been "very shortly" but it never saw the light of day! On the other hand, this very album was released in Germany at the Buntay Republic Festival in June 2006.

On Air is already in the market under the label of Santana Records however, '1974 AD' is scheduled to formally release it on January 5 at Moksh, Pulchowk together with a press release.

They say, "When we had released this album at the festival we had made a special cover design of the album. The reason behind the delay regarding its release in Nepal is because when we had a talk with Santana Records, we agreed to release it only after we complete the promos and the music videos. We were already done with the shooting for the video but since the director behind the making of it -- Simosh Sunuwar -- had not completed his work, we had to hold the release of the album in Nepal. The video has not been completed as yet! However, since we are already late, we do not want to hold it any longer and have decided to go ahead with the release of the album now."

They also inform us that the money collected from the CDs of On Air that were sold in Germany and a huge chunk of the proceeds collected from the shows they performed at while they were there have been passed on to a school in Bhotekoshi. The organizers who were responsible for the Buntay Republic Festival were here. "Some time back during August 2006, they were here and together with them we donated the money to the school," claims the AD's. Great gesture!

Anil Singh Makes A 2007 Headstart

Lately, Anil Singh has been keeping a low profile and he reasons that he chose to do so because of his involvement in his own personal affairs and work related to his fourth album. He says, "In 2006, I really was very inactive concerning my music. However, now I am back in business and very shortly I shall resume my work…my music!"

True to what he is saying, he will be leaving for India sometime during the second week of January for a concert in Shillong and Gauhati. Altogether, he has three solo programs fixed for which the dates have already been finalized. The first event is going to kick-start on January 28 followed by another one on January 29. The date for the last program has not been worked on as yet, as per information provided by Anil himself.

Besides this, he has also completed the recording of his fourth album. He informs, "There are altogether 10 songs on it, each of it varies from the other, and I did so as an experiment. The beats range from fast to slow, sentimental to funky and techno to hip-hop. As of now, talks regarding its release is going on with Music.com but nothing has been decided yet on paper. Anything can happen in the last moment and I may or may not release this album under the label of Music.com!" just to let you know his previous album 'Priyatama' was released under the banner of Samjhana Audio Video (SAV).

Butwal Gets Its Share Of Music

After entertaining the fans at the Industrial Trade Fare, Butwal, together with other well known artists, Hemanta Sharma is now in Rajapur, Bardia. Today, he shall be performing at a solo event organized by Lucky Dance Centre scheduled at Rajapur. Local artists from Bardia will also be sharing the limelight with him. "This is the first time that an event of this magnitude has been organized here," states Hemanta. He will be coming back to the capital on January 7.

Giving us more details of his earlier program held at Butwal he says, "Around 40,000 people attended the show on the day of the programs. The other artists who performed at this event with me were Suresh Adhikari, Badri Pangeni, Bhagwan Bhandari and Purushottam Neupane." He further informs, "Sugam Pokharel and Kamal Man Singh will be the highlights of the shows today and tomorrow at the Industrial Trade Fair. Sources from Butwal say that organizers are planning more events of this nature in the near future because of the tremendous response that they have received so far.

Maya Meri Maya, once again....

According to yesteryear pop star Sanjay Shrestha, veteran filmmaker Deepak Rayamajhi is all set to make a movie titled 'Maya Meri Maya'. Shedding more light on the matter, he states that the title of this movie has been taken from his song "Maya Meri Maya", which was a very popular song during its time. He says, "This flick is going to be directed and produced by Deepak Rayamajhi. One of the songs in this movie is going to be the same track i.e. "Maya Meri Maya" and the rest of the numbers will be composed by me." "Maya Meri Maya is a song included in the first album of Sanjaya Shrestha -- 'Mode'.

Recently, Sanjay has completed the composition for Raju Shah's movie 'Sapana Ko Naulo Sansar' and for Sovit Basnet's new movie. He mentions that his sixth album 'Timi Bina' under the name of 'Crossroads' will be released sometime during April this year; being released after a gap of five years. His last album was 'Jau Timi Jau'. "I am hopeful that today's youth are going to love the songs on 'Timi Bina' since I have incorporated music that they go for! The delay in the release of 'Timi Bina' is because I was busy with my personal work." shares Sanjay.

Since 1992, Sanjay has been releasing albums with the name of his one time band 'Crossroads'. A decade has already passed by since 'Crossroads' disbanded but Sanjay still prefers to use the name 'Crossroads'. When we asked him the reason for tagging the name Crossroads with his new music, he mentions, "The band members of 'Crossroads' as well as the band introduced me to the Music industry of Nepal. Now, though the band does not exist, I still have the sentiments and the emotional attachment to it. People do recognize me as an individual but I want the 'Crossroads' to be remembered for a long time. There was a time when I had thought of adding new members to the band and hit the road but so far nothing has been worked out!"

Middle Marsyangdi works to resume

Following written assurances by the government and the Maoists, the German-based consultants of the Middle-Marsyangdi hydropower project have given the green signal to resume its stalled works.

The Fischner JV – international consultant of the project – withdrew its suspension order on Friday paving way for the resumption of the project construction works, which were stalled a week ago.

All the eight contractors of the project had withdrawn their works citing threats by the pro-Maoist workers who reportedly compelled them to recognize their trade union by using intimidating and threatening tactics.

Soon after they suspended the works, the Maoist spokesperson Krishna Bahadur Mahara wrote a letter stating that his party does not have any policy of threatening or using force against contractors or workers of the project. Similarly, the Home Ministry also issued a statement saying it would provide full security to the project workers.

Subsequently, the meeting held among the Nepal Electricity Officials, consultants and contractors on Thursday had decided to resume the project works. The decision was approved by the headquarters of the consultants, which is based in Germany, on Friday. Following this approval, the contractors have decided to resume works from Friday itself.

The 72 MW Middle Marsyangdi project is being financed by German government. Its completion has already been delayed by three years and its costs, too, have doubled due to the delay.

NWSC employees threaten to cut water supply of palace, PM’s residence

The protesting employees of Nepal Water Supply Corporation (NWSC) have warned that they will stop the supply of water to the Royal Palace, Singh Durbar, Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar, minister’s quarters and Birendra International Convention Center from Sunday afternoon protesting the government’s move of amending NWSC Act.

The employees have said that they will divert the water being supplied to these places to taps of general people.

Gopi Khadka, chairman of NWSC Employees’ Association, said, “It is shameful that the all-party government has come up with the most undemocratic decision by passing the controversial bill, which was held back even by the royal regime.”

The employees informed that unlike common consumers, who receive water supply from half-inch pipes at low pressure, the palace, Singh Durbar and the Prime Minister’s residence receive water from five-inch pipes at full pressure.

The water supply to most parts of the country was hit Friday due to the strike called by the employees of the NWSC against the government’s move to privatise water supply.

The employees of NWSC has been protesting the parliament’s decision to pass the NWSC (Third Amendment) Bill, that will entitle the government to handover the government-owned water distribution mechanism to a foreign company.

They have also decided to halt the office work on Sunday and organize protest programme across the country.

They have been protesting stating that pivatisation of water a basic human need, will make it costlier and splitting of NWSC will damage the water supply system.

Khadka further informed that water supply was halted during the office hours.

Members of the Joint Struggle Committee of the NWSC Employees’ Associations shouted slogans against the government’s privatisation drive, burnt the copies of the Bill to Amend the NWSC Act and locked the NWSC office on Friday.

The amendment is a part of reform package under the Melamchi Water Supply Project. With the amendment the NWSC will cede control of Kathmandu valley’s water supply system to the recently registered Kathmandu Valley Water Limited in turn will contact out the management of the system to UK firm.

On Saturday, a struggle committee is presenting an appeal to the Speaker of the House of Representaitves, asking for repeal of the amendment, Khadka added.

Babu Bogati Hits The Small Screen…Once Again

He is doing a serial called 'Sanskar' directed by Resh Raj Acharya. He says, "I decided to get into it since the storyline is good and it revolves around the life of an artist. Ram Chandra Kafle will be leaving for London on January 1 for a series of programs. As of now, the first event has been confirmed for January 6 and that is all that he knows at the moment. He informs, "The event has been organized to celebrate New Year 2007 by Tamu Dhi Association UK. The other artists who are going along with me are Jharana Bajracharya and Krishna Gurung. Jharana will be performing there and Krishna will be singing some Gurung numbers and I will be entertaining the people with my songs."

After returning back to the country from London, Ram Chandra will again be preparing himself for a trip to Hong Kong for yet another event there. "Tentatively, during the second week of February, I will be in Hong Kong. The event has been organized by people from Myagdi who have been residing in Hong Kong for a long time." The other artists who will be sharing the limelight with him in Hong Kong will be Satya Kala Rai and a panche baja troupe. "Some artists from Kollywood will also be going with us however, until now no one has been finalized," states Ram Chandra.

Missing "LITTLE BUDDHA" found

‘Missing’ for nine months, which led to a variety of speculation, Ram Bomjan popularly known as ‘Buddha boy’, was found in a mediating posture at a jungle in Bara district Monday.

When local villagers saw the boy at the Bagkhora jungle at around 7:00 in the morning he looked slender than before, was in grimy cloths and had long hair flowing down his shoulder, reports said. Briefly talking to media persons, the ‘Buddha boy’ said he lived on herbs throughout these months while wandered around the jungles in Bara, Parsa and Rautahat districts.

A huge crowd formed in the area soon after the news of the Buddha boy’s re-emergence spread in the nearby villages. His pervious handlers, the members of the Tapaswi Sewa Samiti, are settling up a place for his meditation nearby the Halkhori Lake in Ratanpuri, according to reports.

Meditating for ten months under a pipal tree at Ratanpuri jungle, ostensibly without food or water, Bomjan, had vanished from the crowded site on the night of March 11, 2006. There were controversies about his fasting as well as his spiritual claims.

The17-year-old boy’s saga was reported internationally while national and national and international researchers had also thronged to Ratanpuri.

The management committee had claimed that Bomjan left the area as it became unsuitable for him to meditate because of growing crowd. Some of the members of the committee were even charged with misuse of millions of rupees donated by tens of thousands of devotees who visited the site daily.

Nepal's leading folk rock band 'Nepathya' is all set to make their traditional tour of the Nation again. This time they will be touring to 15 places during a span of 40 straight days. "It feels great to be reaching to our fans and well wishers around the country again. Nepal beyond Kathmandu has always been dear to me," says Amrit Gurung, front man / lead vocalist of the Band.

As in the past, this time too 'Nepathya' is associating themselves with a social cause. "Giving continuity to Nepathya's past association, this time too, 'Nepathya' will be speaking for the children of the Nation." adds Kiran Krishna Shrestha, team leader of nepa~laya, the organisers of the tour and managers of 'Nepathya'. As in the past years, 2002 and 2004, the tour will be called – Nepathya "Education for Peace" Tour 2063 as well.

"As peace has prevailed, we thought of advocating another theme – but having recently travelled to places in the nation and visited many community schools all over, I felt - children in schools and the education sector still need an encouraging voice. Children are still vulnerable to political and other exploitations. Thus, we decided to continue with our slogan – Education for Peace." justifies Amrit. The entourage is set to leave Kathmandu on December 21and will be back for the final show in Kathmandu scheduled for January 31.

The tour will take them through Narayanghat, Damak, Dhankuta, Lahan, Hetauda, Butwal, Dhangadi, Surkhet, Sandhikharka, Tamghas, Pokhara, Besi Sahar, Trisuli Bazaar, Jiri, and then finally wind up in the Capital.

According to information provided by the family, Narendra is currently in Japan. He went there for a period of six months and is scheduled to come back sometime during February. The same family member who we spoke to states, "Narendra has not even been to Japan for four months and Aastha is doing all this! Narendra is going to be devastated now!" As stated by this family member, Rajendra Bista has not been in Nepal for long. He is also a married man and is a father of two children. It was only after knowing about the divorce papers that Aastha had filed at a court in Dang that the family of Aastha became aware of her marriage to another man. Avinash Ghising Doing It His Style

Avinash Ghising has been pretty busy lately traveling around various villages and compiling folk songs. He intends to incorporate them in his upcoming album 'Hill Area' after reworking on them. On December 15, he came back from his trip to Solukhumbhu and seems to be happy with his efforts so far.

He had made a similar trip to Solukhumbhu with the same objective sometime back as well and since those numbers have already been recorded, he decided to go there again to get some more tunes. "I want to give something new to my listeners and wish to do something different. Not only that, I want to give continuity to the trend of traveling around and getting different tunes and that is why I went to Solukhumbhu," informs Avinash.

These days, we have been hearing many rap songs from him and he cares to mention that this time round he will be singing melody songs as well. "I have always liked singing rap songs and besides that I have also preferred going for melody numbers. So better late than never… I have decided to go for it too!" states Avinash further adding, "I was in Solukhumbhu for a week and the melodies that I have collected shall be incorporated in an R & B flavor."

Eight parties express commitment towards refugee repatriation

At a time when the offer of third country resettlement has sparked controversy among the refugee population, senior leaders of eight major political parties have signed a commitment towards their honorable repatriation.

In their signed commitment, political leaders have urged Bhutan government to help in the repatriation of refugees languishing in Nepal. They have also asked international community to support this initiative.

The commitment has been signed by Nepali Congress (NC) leader Chakra Prasad Bastola, NC-Democratic leader Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat, Unified Marxist Leninist (UML) leader Jhal Nath Khanal, Maoist leader Suresh Ale Magar, People's Front (PF) leader Lila Mani Pokharel, Nepal Workers and Peasants Party (NWPP) leader Prem Suwal, Nepal Sadbhavana Party (NSP) leader Narsingh Chaudhary and United Leftist Front (ULF) leader CP Mainali.

The latest commitment by the political leaders has come when western countries like the United States have expressed their willingness to resettle the refugees in their countries. Most refugee leaders including Tek Nath Rijal, however, have been saying that first priority must be repatriation to Bhutan.

Prachanda's praise for India creates illusion among masses: Indian Maoists

Indian Maoists have criticized recent praises heaped on India by Maoist chairman Prachanda.

"Prachanda's repeated praise for India's role in bringing about the agreement creates illusions among the masses about India rather than preparing them for fighting the Indian expansionists who are keen on skirmishing Nepal in future," said Azad, spokesperson of Communist Party of India (Maoists) in a statement.

He was probably referring to Prachanda's remarks made a month ago when he praised India for facilitating the 12-point agreement between the political parties and Maoists signed a year ago in New Delhi. This agreement had set the stage for the coming together of the parties and the Maoists to launch people's movement, which forced King Gyanendra to give up powers.

Azad was also skeptical of India's role in helping Prachanda arriving at an agreement. India was aiming to disarm and isolate the Maoists as it was aiming to grab the natural wealth of Nepal particularly its huge hydel potential and to make it a safe haven for the imperialists and Indian comprador capitalists, the statement posted online a few days ago states.

In its public reaction to their Nepali comrades' decision to join the peaceful mainstream of politics, the Indian Naxalites have criticized the decision of Nepali Maoists to join mainstream and deposit their weapons in cantonments.

"Even more surprising is the assertion by the CPN(Maoist) that their current "tactics" in Nepal would be an example to other Maoist parties in South Asia. Comrade Prachanda had also given a call to other Maoist parties to reconsider their revolutionary strategies and to practice multiparty democracy in the name of 21st century democracy. Our CC makes it crystal-clear to CPN(M) and the people at large that there can be no genuine democracy in any country without the capture of state power by the proletariat and that the so-called multiparty democracy cannot bring any basic change in the lives of the people," the statement adds.

The Indian Maoists have said that such move by Nepali Maoists was detrimental to the interests of the revolutionary movements not only in Nepal but also in South Asia. "There can be no genuine democracy in any country without the capture of state power by the proletariat,'' the Communist Party of India (Maoists) said in a statement.

Urging the Maoists for withdrawal from the agreement with the Seven Party Alliance (SPA), party spokesman Azad said there should be "rethink about their current tactics which are actually changing the very strategic direction of the revolution in Nepal." The surrender of arms of PGA would only make people defenseless, he stated.

The Indian Maoists have further said that depositing arms could lead to reversal of gains made by people of Nepal. They have also said that the clause in the agreement to deposit equal number of arms by both sides "will obviously work in favour of Koirala-led Government' as it would have the option to use the huge stock of arms still at the disposal of the army." They have also questioned the decision to allow the United Nations to monitor the depositing of arms saying that the UN itself was "an instrument in the hands of imperialists."

UN monitors arriving within 10 days; assessment report is ready

A 35-member expert team of the United Nations is arriving in Nepal within ten days to monitor the management of arms and armies.

UN Secretary-General's personal representative to Nepal, Ian Martin, told a news conference at the UN office in Kathmandu that UN monitors would start their works as soon as they land here.

A group out of 35 monitors is set to arrive within 10 days while another team of 25 election experts will be here in the coming weeks, according to him.

The electoral advisors, who are yet to be recruited, will be working with the Election Commission for constituent assembly elections due mid-June 2007.

He said discussions were underway with the government and the Maoists on whether to involve former British and Indian Gurkha army personnel, as an interim taskforce, in the arms management work.

The UN envoy also informed that the UN Technical Assessment Mission (TAM), which started its works in Nepal one week earlier, has completed its assessment on logistical needs in the cantonments of the Maoist army, arrangement of resources and monitoring personnel.

"The assessment mission today completed its work, and I will be sending its report to the UN Headquarters for the decision of the secretary general," he said.

Based on the TAM report, the UN Headquarters will determine the budget and logistical support necessary for monitoring of arms and armies in Nepal.

Standing committee member of CPN-UML Amrit Kumar Bohara has alleged that monarchy is existing in the country due to the Nepali Congress.

Speaking at a press meet organised by the Lamjung chapter of Press Chautari Nepal in Lamjung on Saturday, Bohara, who termed Nepali Congress as a “status quo” party said, “The monarchy is existing due to the elements of status quo and those elements that have a dominant role in the government.”

He also claimed that restructuring of the nation is impossible as long the monarchy continues and stressed the need for unity among supporters of democracy in order to abolish monarchy from the country.

Bohara however revealed that though there is disagreement among the eight political parties on minor issues, there is no disagreement on major issues, adding, "The minor disagreements do not affect the election of constituent assembly.”

Bohara demanded to publicize the report of the Rayamajhi Commission and take action against the guilty persons as pointed by the report.

"We should put pressure on the government for the implementation of the report,” Bohara added.

Nation moving towards republic set up: Aryal

Coordinator of the Interim Constitution Drafting Committee and former Supreme Court Justice Laxman Prasad Aryal has said that the nation was indeed heading towards a republican set-up and that only issue was whether it will end up to be the “people’s republic” or stop at “democratic republic.”

Talking to journalists on the future course of the nation following finalisation of the interim constitution, Aryal said, “Of course the nation is now hurtling towards a republican set-up. But we have yet to see whether it will be “people’s republic” or “democratic republic”.

The committee headed by Aryal submitted the draft to the government and the Maoist by leaving space in the issues in which the ruling seven party alliance and the Maoists did not find consensus.

The interim constitution finalized by the ruling seven party alliance and Maoists deprived King from any rights related to state affairs and the Prime Minister will execute all jobs related to the country's state affairs and administration.

Sudip Giri…Taking It All In His Stride

Everything untoward that happens in the life of a celebrity has to happen to Sudip Giri! Whether this is a coincidence or whether his fate, is a thing that he has been pondering upon for quite a while now. It is not that other artists have not faced any hardships in their day-to-day lives. The only difference is that Sudip shares them with us and we are more than happy to listen to him and his grievances. What a relation!

A few weeks back, Sudip along with Nalina Chitrakar, Pramod Nirwan, Ram Chandra Kafle and Poozana Pradhan were touring Dhangadi, Mahendranagar and Tikapur for a concert. Now, although the tour is over Sudip still can't stop talking about this trip. He states, "This is the worst event that I have ever been associated with. Sorry to say but the management was pathetic and very indecent. Let me also reveal the organizer's name! He is called Topendra Kunwar. When the event ended, he did not pay us the amount that we had initially agreed upon. You know what he did! During the entire journey, he was the one who was driving which was fine with us but he was driving so recklessly that he nearly killed us. I am not exaggerating…believe me…he nearly killed us! Thank God! Nothing happened! The only good thing that happened during that entire tour was that the concert was a huge success and I am happy about it." Leaders put their signature in the interim constitution

Following the overnight discussion in Baluwatar, the top political leaders have put their signature in the interim constitution.

After over seventeen hours of marathon talks, the leaders finally reached to common understanding over contentious provisions of the interim constitution.

The interim constitution has 169 articles. It will be formally promulgated once the arms management of the Maoist is completed.

According to reports, in the interim constitution the Prime Minister is authorized to use all the powers hitherto exercised by the King. "All powers related to rule or administration will now be exercised by the Prime Minister," said Bharat Mohan Adhikary, standing committee member of the Unified Marxist Leninist this morning.

Likewise, Adhikary added that right to education, employment and health will be recognized as basic rights. The interim constitution has not altered the status of Cow as national animal. Two ballot papers will be used in the Constituent Assembly in consultation with the Election Commission.

The talks had started at around 3 pm in the afternoon on Friday and it went throughout the night. All top leaders of eight parties were present in the discussion. There were series of formal and informal meetings among the political leaders. And finally they sealed the deal in the morning on Saturday on Poush 1 – the same day when King Mahendra had promulgated the Panchayati constitution back in 1962.

Over a dozen Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal activists were injured in a clash with students who tried to thwart their pro-King rally in Kathmandu Friday morning.

Chanting slogans in favour of monarchy and against the SPA government and the Maoists, RPP-Nepal activists marched up to the Prime Minister's residence in Baluwatar from Narayan Chaur in Naxal.

The demonstrators clashed with a group of students dominated by Maoist cadres at Baluwatar. Police tried to disperse the crowd but were held back for some time as the students warned them not to interfere.

Baluwatar area remained tensed for more than an hour as students affiliated with the eight parties protested against what they called revival of reactionary activism.

RPP-Nepal chairman Rabindra Nath Sharma, who led the rally, submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala at the latter's residence as the protest continued outside. The party in its memorandum said monarchy should remain for political stability in the country.

Last week, students had disrupted a regional convention of RPP-Nepal in Pokhara. A few leaders and party cadres participating in the convention were roughed up by the students.

The RPP-Nepal's leaders are mostly former Panchas and former royalist ministers.

It was nearly two years back that 'Abhaya and the Steam Injuns' had released their debut album. They say that they have already completed the compilation of songs for their second venture for which the recoding will begin very soon. They promise that they shall not take much time in the recording process. "On February, we have a Hong Kong tour and as soon as we are back, we plan to release the new album," mentions Abhaya.

"It is not at all going to be the same! The specialty of our new album is that we have four songs written by poet Viplob Prateek. We love those songs to the core and we are very much excited to reveal those numbers to our listeners. We also believe that to get his creations is a plus point for us and our album!" Later she adds, "Our first album did incorporate rock, hip-hop and rap numbers among other flavors of music. However, the rock songs became more popular since we had visualized those numbers. Maoists use force to stop relocation of police posts

Maoist activists have intensified their efforts to stop relocation of police posts in several parts of the country.

A day after the Maoists obstructed the initiatives to relocate police posts that were displaced in the past due to conflict in Beltari of Nawalparasi district, their activists in Rupandehi district captured the police post in Dhakdhai on Thursday and booted out the policemen who had been posted there only six days ago.

In Dhakdhai, reports say that the Maoists brought a number of common people from around the area and made them to demonstrate while they resorted to vandalism and threw out bedding and other stuffs belonging to policemen.

According to Kantipur daily, Maoists forced people from Simarhawa, Amarhawa, Barahawa, Padamwa, Mainihawa, Pakadbhindi as well as other villages like Uttar Devadaha, Kerbani and Makahar in the vicinity of 10 kilometer from the area to participate in the demonstration. Women and children were also among the people. Many of them said they had come out of curiosity to watch the incident.

The Maoists forced 18 policemen led by sub-inspector Shambhu Chaudhary out of the post. Chaudhary later said that the Maoists might be working under guidance of certain elements because the establishment of police post had affected smuggling in the area.

In Nawalparasi, too, the Maoists warned the policemen to return from recently relocated Sunawal post. Immediately after the Maoists went away, local village women descended on the police post and requested them not to shift from there.

In districts like Sindhupalchowk, Kavre and Sankhuwasabha also the Maoists have started obstructing the relocation of police post. Similar campaigns have been reported from far-western districts like Doti, Kanchanpur and Achham.

The Maoists have claimed that they would not allow police post relocation till interim government including them is formed.

Local political party leaders and civil society have termed this campaign of Maoists as violation of peace agreements.

In fact, the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) signed on November 21 by the government and the Maoists also agrees that the task of carrying out day-to-day law and order situation will be given to Nepal Police and Armed Police Force. "Nepal Police and Armed Police force shall continue to work for maintaining peace and investigation into the criminal activities as per the spirit and content of the peace agreement and prevailing laws," the agreement states.

Umesh Mainali, secretary at the Home Ministry, also says that the recent efforts by the government to relocate police posts was guided by this very peace agreement and as per the demands made by local people.

Supreme Court rejects case against King

The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed a petition filed against King Gyanendra.

Acting upon a petition filed by advocate Jitman Basnet, a single bench of Justice Tahiar Ali Ansari ruled, "Since the rejection order passed by the administration (registar) of the SC was based on existing law, there was no need to proceed it further."

After the rejection order by the administration, advocate Basnet has challenged the administration's move in the Justice's bench.

Joint registar Til Prasad Shrestha had refused to admit a contempt of Court case filed against King Gyanendra and army officials.

The SC administration had rejected the petition citing technical ground.

Kathmandu most polluted city of Asia: Report

A recent report has revealed that Kathmandu is the most polluted city among 20 cities of Asia.

A study report prepared by a team led by Cornie Huizenga with the assistance of Asian Development Bank showed that Kathmandu is in the top of the list of sensitive cities from the air pollution point of view.

The study was released as Asian environment ministers held the first governmental meeting on Asian urban air quality this week in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

"There is high possibility of human loss due to the diseases caused from pollution," the report warned.

WHO scientists estimate 537,000 people in Southeast Asia and the Pacific die prematurely each year due to air pollution.

The level of PM10 in the air of Kathmandu is 120 microgram per square meter. As Per the standard of World Health Organization the level of PM10 should be 20 microgram per square meter.

The level of PM10 is high than the official standard in most of the places of Kathmandu valley.

Indian Capital Delhi and Indonesian Capital Jakarta also fall in the list of sensitive cities from the pollution point of view.

The report was prepared based on research at major cities of Asia.

The report studied 22 Asian cities and one of its key findings is that the concentration of the fine particulate matter PM10 is “serious” in Beijing, Dhaka, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Jakarta, Kathmandu, Kolkata, New Delhi, and Shanghai.

"Asia’s growth in population, urbanization, motorization and energy consumption remain key challenges to efforts to counter air pollution," the report adds .

The Kantipur Daily quoted Suman Sharma of Ministry of Environment as criticizing that the report failed to mention official source of information and prepared without direct involvement of any organization.

However, environmentalist Bhusan Tuladhar said that there is a need of immediately improving the pollution level of Kathmandu.

Nepal ranks "3rd" in human rights violations

The Asian Centre for Human Rights (ACHR) has ranked Nepal 3rd in issue of human rights violations.

A newly released SAARC Human Rights Violators’ Index 2006 released in New Delhi on Wednesday said apart from repression of political parties, violations of the right to life were widespread in Nepal.

About 1,524 persons – 815 persons by the security forces and 709 persons by the Maoists – were killed in 2005.

“Nepal remained the most dangerous place for children in South Asia with extra judicial execution, torture and forcible recruitment,” the report noted.

An estimated 58 children, including 16 girls, were reportedly killed during January - September 2005 alone. Of them, Maoists reportedly killed 46 children, including 11 girls. Over 140 children were reportedly injured by the security forces and the Maoists during 2005, including at least 80 in bomb explosions by Maoists.

ACHR has appreciated the role of judiciary under trying circumstances. “The Supreme Court of Nepal admitted petitions challenging the constitutional validity of ordinances issued by King Gyanendra, thereby, questioning the authority of the despotic ruler,” the report adds.

Half of all the cases of press censorship in the world in 2005 were reported from Nepal and at least two journalists were killed, 425 journalists were arrested, attacked or threatened. Accountability for human rights violations in Nepal remains the key challenge, the report added.

Bangladesh has been ranked No. 1 violator of human rights, followed by Bhutan, Nepal, Maldives, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and India at No.7.

Winter rains make days colder

The unexpected rainfall that started throughout the country from early Monday morning has resulted in the mercury plummeting and sent chills in Kathmandu and hilly areas.

Usually, the winter showers are expected only in December end. However, this year the winter rain came well ahead because of the westerlies from the Bay of Bengal entering Nepal and moving east.

According to the officials at the Meteorological Forecasting Division, the rains would stop by Tuesday evening.

The rainfall has been boon for winter crops while the people in the hilly and mountainous regions are facing a winter chill because of snowfall. In the western hilly districts, snowfall has begun. The rainfall would lengthen the duration of cold this winter.

In the last 24 hours, Dang received the highest rainfall of 13 mm. Likewise the rainfall in Dadeldhura is recorded at 12 mm, Nepalgunj 12.8, Birendra Nagar 10, Dhangadi 11.2 and Kathmandu 0.7 mm. Kathmandu and Bhairahawa also received thundershowers.

The unexpected rain has disrupted domestic flights from Tribhuvan International Airport with only two flights taking off till Monday noon. However, the international flights are regular, officials at the TIA information centre said.

A court here today extended the date to January four in a case filed against Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai and actor Hrithik Roshan for allegedly performing an obscene scene in the film Dhoom-2.

The case was filed in the court of judicial magistrate first class (JMFC) R K Batham by the advocate Shailendra Dwivedi under section 292 (vulgarity) and 509 (derogatory to women) of the IPC.

The court today extended the date in the case to January four for recording statement of the complainant.

It's often said that to change the system, one must remain within the system. And Baabul does this beautifully; clichéd enough not to rock the boat yet admirably, progressive, the film tries to maintain a balance between the two in every frame.

So there's Balraj Kapoor, played by Amitabh Bachchan, who's a traditionalist with a twist. While he believes and encourages Karva Chauth, he has strong, progressive views on widow remarriage. So when his only son Avinash, played by Salman Khan, dies tragically in an accident, he feels that his daughter-in-law Malvika should remarry, and not live a punished life. He encourages a romance between Malvika and Rajat (John Abraham), who's Malvika's childhood friend and has secretly been in love with her all along.

All's swell till the party poopers - the super conservative relatives vehemently oppose. Balraj's elder brother Balwant (Om Puri), is the sort who feels that widows bring bad luck to any auspicious event, and so keeps his widowed daughter-in-law (Sarika, with exactly one dialogue) within the four walls of the house. When he hears the, to-him bizarre, event of his younger brother getting his daughter-in-law remarried, he loses it. And tries to stop the wedding in typical filmi style, with a bellowing – ‘Ye shaadi nahin ho sakti'.

Interestingly, this very modern film follows the old school of filmmaking. So you have the super-rich North Indian family, sprawling mansions, beautiful, docile always-agreeable women in sindoor and mangalsutra. Still, it manages to be a supremely forward film. And a good film, largely because of Amitabh Bachchan, who's so convincing and lovable as Baabul, he has you in the palm of his hand. In his big, droopy eyes, you see his young daughter-in-law's pain reflected. And during his end monologue, you just want to get up and applaud. One of the lines has him thunder -`’we say that the practice of sati is over. But isn't denying a widow the right to live fully, equal to sati?'

Rani Mukherjee as Malvika shows up another award-winning performance after Black. In fact, in many intense scenes between Bachchan and Mukherjee, you feel the palpable connection and magic that the two brought together in Black. Complementing each other perfectly, and carrying the film on their shoulders, the two talent powerhouses are a treat to watch.

Salman's Avinash is an underdeveloped character. However the relationship between Avinash and Malvika is real and deep. This is a rare kind of on-screen romance, where the two are as much companions as they are man and wife. Keeping up its progressive tone, the film also shows Avinash attend pregnancy Lamaze classes with his wife saying that – ‘bache paida karna teamwork hota hai'. But the film falls back to old school again, and has the two break into song and dance, in open fields, without situation or warning. Again, while Malvika is a painter, who you feel would do a little more with her life post-wedding, she has her life revolving around karva chauth. It's good that she has a mind of her own, but what is she doing with it?

The music is ordinary and songs include the by-now customary Punjabi disco song, that's typically picturised with full family dancing alongside foreigner extras. The dialogues, save a few scenes towards the ending, disappointingly lack spirit, and do nothing to elevate the film. Director Ravi Chopra, credibly, again makes a film dealing with an issue. Baghban had one flinch a bit, at the stark black and white characters. By contrast, Baabul is a step up in trying to merge the old and the new.

Watch Baabul, for the story and brilliant performances by Amitabh and Rani. The three stars are largely for them.

Third bronze for Nepal; Shakya is the winner

Ayesha Shakya won the third bronze medal for Nepal in the ongoing 15th Asian Games in Doha, Qatar.

Shakya had to be satisfied with the bronze medal in the 59-kg category of Taekwondo after she was defeated by a Vietnamese player Thi Hoai Thu Nguyen in the semi finals.

Shakya, a silver medalist at the Tenth South Asian Games held earlier this year, had reached semi finals after defeating a Chinese player.

She became the third Nepalese player to win a bronze medal in the Doha Asiad. Earlier, Manita Shahi had won the medal in 63-kg category while Deepak Bista had won the medal in the 78-kg category.

Meanwhile, runner Arjun Bahadur Basnet finished at the 11th place in the marathon tournament by clocking 2 hours 23 minutes and 55 seconds. A Qatari runner won the marathon 11 minutes and 11 seconds ahead of Basnet who had won a silver medal in the marathon at Tenth South Asian Games.

Dev Rana is a very respected name in the music scene of Nepal. Most of us who have followed the development of the music industry closely shall vouch for that. For many, he is the great ‘Father of Percussions,’ an idol for many young aspiring drummers and for the rest he is just a 'cool musician'. He has been in the entertainment business for over 30 years and still has the same charm and his abilities behind the drum sets have not faded a bit. He still has an overwhelming effect on the crowd during performances.

He has taught innumerable wannabe drummers the skills and he is proud to inform us that roughly about 15 of his students are as of now, seriously doing music full time. He says, "I think around 15 of my students are now in the music line as in they have taken up music professionally. I feel glad to see them performing and performing pretty well at that! What more can one ask for!" These days he has been taking private classes and the learners are mostly from Lincoln School.

He states that he has set a goal, which he intends to accomplish by 2007. He wants to open up his own institution where the aspiring musicians with an interest in learning to play the drums can join in and become skilled at playing other instruments as well. He adds, "I also want to come out with a little demo CD for beginners. This CD shall be handy to those who want to learn to play the drums. I have been working on this project for the last three years and I want the work done by 2007."

Besides this, once a week one could also catch up with him performing at Hotel Shangrila, Lazimpath along with 'Nekham'. However, he informs that the gig has taken a break for now. No worries since he also confirms that next week; to be precise on December 18, he shall start performing with 'Nekham' at the Shangrila once again. Lastly, he shares, "I hope to have a re-union concert of 'Prism' sometime next year." Wow! That would be something to look forward to!

We are grown up singing “Shree Man Gambhira Nepali” but now it’s time to remember another song for the Anthem. Due to the political changes in our country, the National Anthem is decided to be changed.

A song written by Pradeep Rai as known as “Byaakul Maila,”has been referred to as the new National Anthem. The song is like “Sayaau Thunga Phool Haami Eutai Mala Nepali” and it contains 5 paras and 47 words. It has been selected by the “National Anthem Selection Task Team” under the chairmanship of cultural analyst, Mr. Satya Mohan Joshi.

Mr. Joshi handed over the song to the “Cultural & Tourism minister” Mr. Pradeep Gyawali, at a press conference organized last Thursday. The song was selected among 1 thousand 2 hundred and 72 songs, without looking at the name of the lyricist.

However, the team has selected the song, it is yet to be finalized by the cabinet. There are still some controversies that the lyricist was a king’s supporter before. Now that his lyric is selected, some people are still not willing to grant his song as the “National Anthem”.
There is still some confusion whether the song will be recognized as the National Anthem or not.

Bista bags second bronze for Nepal

Deepak Bista bagged the second bronze medal for Nepal at the ongoing 15th Asian Games in Doha, Qatar.

Bista bagged the bronze medal in 75-kg category by defeating a Kuwaiti player in the quarter final on Friday. He, however, lost to a Qatari player in semi final, in what the Korean coach Kwon Hyouk claimed as biased refereeing.

After Manita Shahi won the first bronze medal on Thursday, this was the second medal for Nepal.

Meanwhile, on Friday, Kanchhi Maya Koju completed her 10,000 meter running in 37 minutes 59.76 seconds. A silver medalist at Tenth South Asian Games, Koju came last in the race in Doha, which was won by a Japanese runner.

"Poila Jana Pam" is one song which has been bringing back the smiles on most peoples’ faces and at the same time criticisms have been flowing in. Sung by Komal Oli it is the title song of an album of the same name. and released under the label of Music Nepal.

Just recently, two artists -- Bimam Chhetri and Suman Budha – cashing in on the popularity of "Poila Jana Pam" have released a song titled "Maile Lyauna Pam" incorporated on the album of the same name, 'Maile Lyauna Pam'. The irony of it all is that 'Maile Lyauna Pam' is doing much better in the market.

All said and done, Music Nepal is now all geared up to file a case against Bimam Chhetri and Suman Budha. Komal states, "I have no grievance against Bimam and Suman. Their song is very entertaining but Music Nepal, from whom I had released 'Poila Jana Pam' are planning to register a complaint against them in court after some homework. They say that Bimam and Suman have copied the tunes of one of my songs titled "Tulsipurma Ma Janda" on this particular song' Maile Lyauna Pam', which is on my previous album 'Mal Mal Kiri' and which was also released by Music Nepal."

Though Komal is not making an issue out of the latest development, she has some grand ideas cooking up in her mind. She shares, "Soon, I will be releasing an album which would be a counter attack to "Maile Lyauna Pam". I am doing so not because I am angry but I believe that this would be rather interesting and entertaining. The song shall be called "K Ho Timro Naam, K Cha Timro Kaam, Palna Sakchau Sakdainau Kati Kamauchau Daam". The flavor of this track will be very jhaurey and will soon hit the music stands."

Shahi bags first medal for Nepal in Doha Asiad

Manita Shahi became the first Nepalese athlete to bag any medal in the ongoing 15th Asian Games being held in Qatar, Doha.

Shahi won the bronze medal in the 63-kg category of Taekwondo on Thursday. She was defeated by an athlete from Chinese Taipei Wen Su Li in the semifinals. Earlier she had trounced Sangya Wangmo of Bhutan in a quarterfinal match after defeating Varsah Bende of India in the first round.

Shahi is a gold medalist at the Tenth South Asian Games held recently in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

However, other medal aspirants failed to win any medal on various categories of Taekwondo on Thursday. Among them include Ramesh Kumar Shrestha, Kumar Manandhar and Yan Kumari Chaulagain. On Friday also, Nepalese athletes will be taking part in Taekwondo competition. Taekwondo, karate and judo are few events in which Nepalese athletes are expected to bring home some medals.

After the audition at Dharan, Narayanghat, Butwal, Nepalgunj and Pokhara, the Nepali Tara 2 Team has finally arrived Kathmandu. The audition is taking place from tomorrow, on the 9th, 10th and 11th December, 06 at Studio4, Kupondole. The audition will be held from 8 am onwards. On the spot registration is required for participation or you can also use the forms printed in the “Annapurna Post”. The participants will be entertained on the first come first served basis.

After the Kathmandu selection, the National level competition will be held on Poush 21, 2063, where the selected participants from different places of the country will compete.

The news of "Little Buddha" hit headlines in the national and international press last year. As the Buddha (real name "Ram Bahadur Bomjan"), who meditated for 10 months "without food and water" in a jungle here, vanished from the jungle in March last year, his parents -- who otherwise were busy giving interviews to the press -- have been living a quiet life these days.

During those days, Maya Devi, mother of Bomjan, used to be busy giving interviews to the national and international media. Nowadays, she has been utilizing her leisure time by cutting grass. "I am going to cut grass, as no one has been here for several days," said Maya Devi.

Last year, Bomjan left his home to meditate at the age of 16 without informing his family. After 10 months of meditation, Bomjan again left his place of meditation from Ratanpuri. Because of his absence in the jungle, this family spends days doing household chores.

The Axe 'Kammasaka' and The Karma's 'Karma'

The Axe's fifth album 'Kammasaka' is all set to release on December 6 under the label of Dhaulagiri Cassette Centre. If you remember, they had released their last album some two years back. The delay regarding this venture, is for sure have been noticed and now we are anxious to hear what they have come up with. If their first album is anything to go by as a yardstick, fans should expect another rocking album from the masters of rock.

Shiva Mukhiya, bassist and vocalist of 'The Axe' mentions that these days they have been working on promos of 'Kammasaka' and the shooting of the first music video will take place after about a week. The song is called "Euta Chithi Ko". Shiva cares to inform us that they shall be doing the pre-production of this video and as about who will be doing the post production works has still not been decided. Last but not the least, Shiva adds that the reason for the delay in releasing their fifth album is due to each of the band members involvement in their own personal affairs. Well…better late than never!

So far, Karma Band have released three very successful albums and lucky them and thanks to their music, whenever they release an album, they have been managing to create quite a buzz in the music circuits. However, it is only during the release of their album that they manage to hit the headlines, but after a couple of weeks, they hit an all time low.

"Since the past three months, 'Karma' has been doing nothing. The reason for this break is because when we release our new album, we want to do it with a bang! We also do not want our listeners to get wakka / dikka with us and that is why we tend to take a break once we are done with our album. Yes, these days we are not performing at any shows but that does not mean that we are sitting idle. We are working hard on our next release and that is how our time flies. But, once we release our new album, we are planning to do a tour. We shall be traveling to seven cities in Nepal and promoting our songs again. By January end, we will be releasing our new album 'Karma' under the label of SAV and on it we have incorporated rock, pop and folk pop numbers," declares Surendra.

Bollywood hero Shah Rukh Khan on Tuesday scotched media reports of his spat with megastar Amitabh Bachchan, saying that it was all baseless.

A section of the press had reported about the Bachchan-Shah Rukh cold war to which the actor said, "Yes, even I have read this in the newspapers. We are grown-up educated people and working professionals. In Hollywood, do you hear news like Tom Cruise bashing up Brad Pitt? Then why is such stuff carried by you here?"

Shah Rukh was at Hotel Lands End to announce his comeback to television as a new avtaar with the biggest game show Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC).

"I never left TV. The journey from Fauji, a serial on the small screen, to KBC is like a home-coming. This show will have a great emotional connection," Shah Rukh said.

He said it was unfair to compare him with Amitabh as the latter's contribution to the world of entertainment is immense. KBC will be aired in January next year from Monday to Thursday at 2100 hrs on StarPlus, Star Entertainment India CEO Sameer Nair said.

Akhtar and Asif cleared of Doping Offences.

A Pakistan tribunal has cleared cricket fast bowlers Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif of doping offences and lifted their long-term bans.

Akhtar had been banned for two years and Asif for one year in early November after the pair tested positive for the banned steroid nandrolone.

The cricketers were exonerated when the panel ruled that they had not had sufficient warning the supplements they were taking could be contaminated by the steroid.

Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board-appointed appeals tribunal Justice Fakhruddin G Ebrahim, announcing the decision in Karachi, said the three-member commission had established that Akhtar and Asif were never advised against taking supplements.

Nor were they provided with any international or local publications warning them against the use of supplements and anti-doping measures.

"It is the considered view of this appeals committee by a majority of 2-1 that Shoaib and Asif have successfully established that they held an honest and reasonable belief that the supplements ingested by them did not contain any prohibited substances," the verdict said.

Both the bowlers had pleaded innocent to the charge of taking banned substances intentionally to enhance their performances and recover from injuries.

Shoaib and Asif had argued that they didn't commit any doping offence as they were not informed about the dangers of the supplements they were using being contaminated with banned substances like nandrolone.

After nearly a year in wilderness, Sourav Ganguly made a dramatic comeback to the Indian Test team in the wake of the side's disastrous performance in South Africa and calls for bringing back experienced players.

VVS Laxman has replaced Virender Sehwag as the vice-captain of the Test side.

While Md Kaif, Ajit Agarkar and Suresh Raina made an exit, Gautam Gambhir and Zaheer Khan returned to the Test squad after a long break. Sreesanth and VRV Singh have also been included in the team.

The decision to recall Ganguly was taken by the national selectors, who, significantly, met BCCI President Sharad Pawar at his residence before their meeting to select the 16-member squad for the three-Test series against South Africa beginning on December 15.

Kaun Banega Crorepati is coming back back early next year with Bollywood's biggest superstar Shah Rukh Khan replacing Hindi cinema icon Amitabh Bachchan as host.

The contract that Star has signed with Shah Rukh is for two seasons with an option to extend it further into a third season. Each season is for 52 episodes, which means that Shah Rukh has committed to shooting 104 episodes of KBC in all.

According to sources SRK will be be paid Rs 280 crore for Kaun Banega Crorepati’s next two seasons. Amitabh Bachchan, the previous host, reportedly received Rs 140-160 crore for 390 episodes.

Cleaning Toilets In Europe

"Ok man! See how he cleans and you have to learn as quickly as you can. I am not going to pay you until you are perfect". My Turkish Boss told me pointing out at a Swedish guy who was cleaning the bar. It was at one of the biggest nightclubs in town. It was my first day of job and I was on the training. After struggling at 100 places, I have finally found this part time job. Forget about earning euros, even surviving becomes difficult in most of the European countries until you speak their local language. You see, even to clean the toilets they want you to speak their language. English is not going to help you anymore. In France speak French, Germany German, Spain Spanish, Holland Dutch, Belgium German or French, Italy Italian, Finland Finnish, Sweden Swedish and rest you name it. I was lucky enough that I got a job as a foreigner. Very quickly I learnt art of cleaning.

Every morning, at freezing cold of Minus 20 degree I leave my warm bed and take a bus to work. The weather is really horrible with snowfall and killing wind. Even more than that, the weather is so gloomy and unpleasant that people get depressed. It has been more than a month that I last saw the Sun. Till 12 in the morning it is dark and again by 3 or 4 afternoon it turns dark again. That was the price to be paid when you live in one of the coldest countries. I did not have any option like in Kathmandu "Damn care". Here work means work. If you are late for a minute you can be kicked out of the job and by chance (remember by chance) it is going to happen, you have to inform them one hour earlier.

Now it has been my routine to clean the bar, washing the wine and beer glasses, then sometimes also clean the toilets. The place where I work is as I said one of the most happening places in town with a disco, night club, pub, bar and restaurant. So the work load is really a lot. Mopping the floor with all the wine stains with gloves in hand is really an AMAZING experience. Though I have heard such things in Nepal, I never imagined myself doing such kind of work. Frankly I considered myself smart (over smart?) in all aspects but… here I’ve seen KO KATI PANIMA….

Gradually, working in this environment has been my passion. Here work means work. Either cleaning the toilet or running the country, you have to prove your sincerity. People who work are highly respected. I can proudly say here that I work as a cleaner and everyone respects me. I have seen many Europeans and Americans doing the same kind of work. More interestingly when my friends at the university came to know about my work I have got trouble. Everyone wants me to help them find a job. Sometimes while cleaning the toilets I curse myself, ‘what I’m doing here! Have I come to do this all the way from my country? I feel sorry for myself.
What I used to earn in Nepal for a whole month, I can make it here in just 10 hours. Many of my friends say Nepalis do not work in Nepal but when they go abroad they are ready to do any type of job, even ‘fourth class’ like cleaning toilets. But I bet I am ready to clean the toilets of Kathmandu if anyone offers me that much money in Nepal. Even I’m ready to wash the dishes in front of all people at KHULA MANCH or TUNDIKHEL or wherever you order.. Here, I did not find gap between staff. Everyone is a staff. No Sir, no madam. You may know very well, there are no Peons in any office. The other day, I saw my Professor carrying tables and computers with great difficulty. When I wanted to help, he says its his work. Then I compare with Nepali HAKIM SAHEBS who need someone even to lift the empty cup from their table. That is difference between Westerners and Nepali Sahebs.

When I was in Nepal, I worked part time while doing colleges for years. Everyday I used to meet my boss BUT never had the opportunity to shake hands with him and never talked to him frankly. Not only my boss but it is almost the same with everyone. But here the Boss is like a friend you can talk to on everything, yes anything. The other day when I was working he came and said "Hi man, do you like music?" when I said yes. He told me "Then why are you working so hard, just listen to the music.” He played the music and I cleaned in rhythmic style and sometimes Boss comes and cleans toilet himself. I work with other four workers Swedish, German, Estonian and Spanish. Though I was one of the laziest guys but here I’m the most hard working. Really we Neaplis work pretty better than Europeans. During 3 hours of work they take five breaks and drink five cups of coffee and always complain that I work too hard. I am really surprised to know it. And nobody wants to pull your legs here like in Nepal until you work with South Asians. Sorry, just got a call from work; got to go.

Raghav Live in Concert

'Raghav Live in Concert' finally happened yesterday at Hotel Yak & Yeti, Durbar Marg to a resounding success! But it did have its flaws. Though scheduled to begin at 7:30 PM onwards began only it only at 10 PM. Those who had already made their way into the venue, in the meantime were entertained by DJ Jwala.

Scores of Raghav fans were in by 7:30 and were pretty disappointed to have to wait for more than 2 hours before the charismatic singer from the UK made a grand entrance. However, the wait was worth it and as Raghav kicked off the show, disappointment vanished from the faces and people instantly started grooving to Raghav’s trademark music.

Presented by Samsung and the event managed by Mirage Entertainment, the show was indeed a memorable one with Iceberg Slim giving a fantastic performance and grabbing the headlines as well. He seemed to be equally popular among the girls with his unique showmanship. People do welcome an event of this magnitude and hopefully more are organized in the days to come. All in all, a great performance by the internationally renowned musician. By the time the show ended, you bet Raghav had added a few thousand more into his ever growing fan list.

"Casino Royale" is really good and Daniel Craig as the new Bond is the best Bond in a very long time. Ever since it was announced that Craig would take on the title role, critics have slammed the choice, relished reports that he couldn't drive the Aston Martin car, and Craig himself had to bear terrible injuries. But it makes it all worthwhile in the end.

The film goes back to the drawing board and traces the way Bond invents himself. He has just been given the "00" status and is too trigger-happy piling on the causalities. He is also raw psychologically and has to mature. Bond has to put his ego in place, learn to respect women and win battles with more character than strength.

The movie by Martin Campbell, who also directed Pierce Brosnan in "Goldeneye", is dramatically streamlined. There are no expensive explosions or nifty gadgets - just great action sequences.

Atypical of it's predecessors, this movie's action sequences consists of the enemy being drowned in the washbasin, choked in a hotel stairwell or just being chased through a construction site - one of the most simple but exhilarating action sequences of any Bond movie.

This movie, in many ways, is the antithesis of the Bond archetype. Apart from the simpler action sequences, there are no one-liners, sexual innuendos and hi-tech gadgets.

It takes Bond almost half way into the movie to put on his tuxedo. Before this, he walks around in ordinary looking but comfortable street clothes that accentuate Craig's physique and prominent biceps.

The penultimate fight between the hero and villain is settled over a game of poker at the Casino Royale and the winner is determined through a test of character and not physical strength.

In the most revealing line of the uniqueness of this movie, a bartender when taking the order of martini asks Bond, "Shaken or stirred?" and Bond spits back at him, "Do I look like I give a damn?"

The supporting actors compliment the look and feel of the film. French actress Eva Green is stunning but also brings in a great touch of coolness and vulnerability. She, unlike other Bond girls, is more intellectual and natural. Her scenes with Craig are subtle yet intense and their sexual chemistry radiates throughout.

The villain Le Chiffre is played by Mads Mikkelsen who has blood for tears and unlike other Bond villains does not care about power or running the world but wants money instead.

Craig is also the first Bond to hurt and bleed properly. He stands in front of the bathroom mirror taking in the pain and needing a scotch to numb the pain. His scars remain the next day and the movie shows the time they take to heal.

As an actor, Craig brings in a lot more pure acting skills and athletic prowess. The film strives to be more rooted in reality than the glossy, fantasy world of the earlier Bond movies.

"Casino Royale" introduces us to the spy who we thought we knew all about but instead reveals a rough-edged man with no refinement, prone to violence and vulnerable enough to fall desperately in love. This is Bond inventing himself. And it is great that we have Craig to show us how he does it.

Wow, this day. I don't know why today is so looking special. May be because its the day of new Nepal or might be today is god's happiest day. Its so soft, its so nice, its so warm today. And talking about m y feelings and thoughts , today is the best day for me.......kya damizz mausam cha aaja. But i cant go out to roam here and there, to walk in the roads. I am so unlucky.

But I dont care all that...just watching the roads, outside window and feeling today's weather. Weather is the one that making today's day special, more special. Wish i could be in my gf's warm hug. hehe. Quite funny.

Anyway, today is really a best day for me and hope for all the nepali people too. Its getting just the day to smoke, drink and enjoy.

cant express more......just silent mode is better i guess. i am enjoying myself.

Its really good to hear and proud to be known that now our Nepal is again a sign of peace. Its been so long date that we were waiting for this day and yesterday just nation gifted us our Nepal.

I want to congrats the people of whole Nepal and the world for our succession. Happy Nepal. May god bless us all. Now no violence but only peace, i pray for we all Nepali and our Nepal.
